GLOSSARY

Over the Road Trucking

Over-the-road trucking involves hauling freight over long distances,  often across state lines and even national borders. An over-the-road  trucker might spend 3-4 weeks on the road at a time, sleeping in either  the truck’s cabin or at hotels and motels along the way.

Asset Flatbed

Asset flatbed shipping is transportation for cargo that may not require the enclosure of a dry van, cannot be loaded or unloaded from a dock or does not fit  within the dimensions of standard truck trailers. A flatbed's design  allows for cranes and forklifts to load goods from all angles.

Heavy Haul

Loads that are beyond the  regulated legal limit on most roads are considered heavy loads. While  numbers vary from state to state, anything past 8.6 feet in width, taller than 13.6 feet in height, longer than 53 feet, or that exceeds 80,000 pounds of gross weight is generally considered a heavy load.

Dry Van

A dry van is a type of semi-trailer that's fully enclosed to protect shipments from outside elements.  Designed to carry palletized, boxed or loose freight, dry vans aren't  temperature-controlled (unlike refrigerated “reefer” units) and can't  carry oversized shipments (unlike flatbed trailers).

LTL Truckloads

LTL (Less Than Truckload) or Partial truckload is a freight mode for large shipments that may not require the use of a full truckload trailer. Partial truckload falls between LTL and full truckload, typically involving shipments over 5,000 pounds  or 6 or more pallets.

International Shipping

International shipping is the process of importing and exporting goods between different countries via ocean, air, or over the road.

Full Container Load

Full Container Load is a shipment type where a cargo occupies the full size of a container.  Sometimes the container may not be fully filled, but the rate is  charged on the basis of a full container. FCL is the standard form of  shipping for a large cargo.

Less than Container Load

LCL is an ocean shipping  term; an abbreviation of Less than Container Load, refers to small  ocean freight shipment wherein the shipper does not contract for a full  container since the quantity of shipment is not adequate to contract for  a full container.

Logistics

Logistics is generally the detailed organization and  implementation of a complex operation. In a general business sense,  logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of  origin and the point of consumption to meet the requirements of  customers or corporations.

Supply Chain

In commerce, a supply chain is a system of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in supplying a product or service to a consumer.

Freight Brokerage

A freight broker is an intermediary between a shipper and a  freight service provider. Freight brokers can specialize in certain  types of freight, such as equipment hauling on lowboys, oversize, bulk  tanker, auto, or other types of freight transportation.
